Tips for Starting a Home Gym for Beginners

Starting a home gym can be incredibly challenging, from picking the equipment you need, making sure the gym is safe for everyone to the actual workouts you should do there is a lot that can make this a daunting process. This blog will help walk you through those steps to make starting a home gym as easy and stress free as possible so you can get to working out quicker. When picking out equipment it’s all about what fits in best for your workout plan. For most new home gyms you don’t need to get every machine possible, it’s all about maximizing the space you have by getting versatile equipment. Starting off with dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls are great for beginners, both because they take up less space than machines but also because you are able to do a number of different workouts with them, check out our other blog to see a list of a few. Resistance bands are another great thing to have in your home gym as they take up very little space and can be used for multiple different exercises like clamshells, squats, bicep curls and triceps extensions. Depending on the size of the space your gym is going to be in, a power rack is an excellent addition to any gym. With the power rack, bar, bench and weight plates you can do multiple different exercises like bench press, squat, deadlift and bent over row. One benefit of the power rack compared to dumbbells and resistance bands is as you progress on your fitness journey you can continue to add weight onto the bar, whereas with kettlebells and resistance bands there is a cap on the weight they go up to. When picking the cardio equipment you want in your gym there are two important things to consider. The first is how much space do you have, if space is no issue then you are free to pick from treadmills, rowers or a cross trainer. If you are limited on space then an exercise or spin bike is the better option. The second factor is if space isn’t an issue then it comes down to what you are looking to get out of the cardio equipment. Cross trainers and rowers are great because they provide a full body workout on top of a cardio workout. Treadmills and exercise bikes are both more for pure cardio; it just comes down to personal preference. When it comes to safety in your home gym there are a couple of things that are important, first when doing the layout ensure that there is enough space both for the equipment you want, but also so you can move around freely during the workout and not trip into things while working out. It’s also important if you are having the gym in a room above the basement make sure that the floor can take the weight. Finally if you want to protect the floor consider getting rubber flooring, as it protects the floor beneath from scratches and dirt.
